SMM, August 20:
The SHFE zinc 2610 contract opened at 25,390 yuan/mt in the morning session. After briefly rising to 25,425 yuan/mt following the open, the contract moved lower amid fluctuations and touched a low of 25,325 yuan/mt. It eventually closed at 25,350 yuan/mt, down 30 yuan/mt, or 0.12%. Trading volume decreased to 64,086 lots, while open interest fell by 978 lots to 138,000 lots. The contract recorded a bearish candlestick for the session. Domestic zinc ingot inventories continued to build, while consumption remained weak, limiting the upside momentum in zinc prices. However, tightness on the ore supply side continued to provide support at lower levels. Zinc prices are expected to maintain a weak and rangebound trend in the near term.
