[SMM Flash News] Nersa Approves Eskom's Discounted Tariff for South African Ferrochrome Producers

Published: May 30, 2026 23:21
South African utility Eskom confirmed that the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa) has approved an amended negotiated pricing agreement (NPA) framework, granting an interim concessionary tariff of 62c/kWh to two major ferrochrome producers, Samancor Chrome and the Glencore-Merafe Venture. Eskom CEO Dan Marokane noted the deal balances support for strategic industrial capacity with the utility's financial sustainability, ensuring no additional burden on standard customers or taxpayers. The agreements, spanning five years for Samancor and three years for Glencore-Merafe, aim to sustain baseload demand, protect jobs across the ferrochrome value chain, and feature an upside-sharing mechanism linked to market performance without requiring additional government fiscal support.

[SMM Flash News] Vulcan Energy Achieves Financial Close for €2.2B Lionheart Lithium Project
Vulcan Energy has officially achieved Financial Close for its €2.2 billion Lionheart Project financing arrangements, unlocking the remaining balance of its equity and debt package. Located in the Upper Rhine Valley between Germany and France, Lionheart is a landmark integrated lithium and renewable energy initiative. The project targets an annual production capacity of 24,000 tonnes of lithium hydroxide monohydrate (LHM), sufficient to power roughly 500,000 electric vehicles per year, alongside 275 GWh of renewable power and 560 GWh of heat over a 30-year lifespan. Following a positive Final Investment Decision and the start of construction in late 2025, reaching Financial Close secures the sequential drawdowns needed to keep the project on track and on budget.
