[SMM PV News] Ember: Solar and Storage Could Meet 90% of India's Power Demand

Published: Apr 9, 2026 09:36
New modeling by Ember reveals that solar paired with battery storage could supply 90% of India's electricity demand at an 'LCOE' of 'INR' 5.06/kWh. Achieving this requires roughly 930 GW of solar capacity and 2,560 GWh of battery storage, utilizing less than a third of the country's ground-mounted solar potential. While a 100% solar system is technically feasible, costs would rise disproportionately, making a 90% target more economically viable when combined with existing wind, hydro, and nuclear. The study notes that solar-plus-storage is already cost-competitive in major Indian states, though maintaining supply during the extended low-sunlight monsoon season remains a primary challenge.

[PV: Scatec Commissions $590M Solar-Plus-Storage Project in Egypt]
Scatec ASA has commissioned its largest project to date in Egypt – the $590 million Obelisk solar-plus-storage project. The project is financed with over 80% non-recourse debt ($479.1 million) from the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development, African Development Bank and British International Investment. The ownership structure includes Norfund and EDF Power Solutions, with Scatec retaining 60% economic interest and operational control. Phase one includes 561 MW of solar and a 100 MW/200 MWh BESS, backed by a 25-year USD-denominated PPA with Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company. A second 564 MW solar phase is scheduled for operation in summer 2026.

[PV: Philippines to Launch GEA-7 Solar Auction with Mandatory Storage for Ground-Mounted Projects]
The Department of Energy of Philippines has confirmed that the seventh Green Energy Auction (GEA-7) will launch in 2026, with the terms of reference expected in Q2. The auction will cover rooftop, ground-mounted, and floating solar, with floating solar including unsubscribed capacity from GEA-4. The program will allocate capacity nationwide but significantly increase allocations in Mindanao, potentially around five times larger than previous rounds to stimulate regional investment. Ground-mounted solar projects must include battery energy storage systems to enhance grid stability. Rooftop and ground-mounted projects are targeted to begin operations in 2027, while floating solar projects are expected between 2027 and 2029.

Italy installed 1,439 MW of new PV capacity in Q1 2026, according to Italia Solare. By March 31, the country had 2.22 million PV systems with a total installed capacity of 44.95 GW. The C&I segment (20 kW–1 MW) grew 24% year-on-year, adding 566 MW, while the residential sector declined 13% and utility-scale installations fell 9%. Lombardy remained the leading region with over 6 GW cumulative capacity and 266 MW added in Q1, followed by Veneto and Lazio. The association noted that installation levels remain below the 6–7 GW annual additions required to meet national solar expansion targets.
