Successful Development of New Electrolyte Provides New Solution for Fast Charging of New Energy Batteries
Researcher Fan Xiulin's team at the College of Materials Science and Engineering, Zhejiang University, has designed a new type of electrolyte that can support the reversible charging and discharging of high specific energy lithium-ion batteries in an ultra-wide temperature range from -70°C to 60°C, and also enable high energy density lithium-ion batteries to complete fast charging and discharging in 10 minutes. The research results were published in the international journal Nature on the 29th. Related test data show that the new electrolyte proposed by Fan Xiulin's team has an ion conductivity at room temperature of 25°C that is four times that of commercial electrolytes, and at -70°C it is over three orders of magnitude higher than commercial electrolytes. 'Under the same conditions, the lithium-ion batteries we designed are able to achieve 80% charge in 10 minutes, demonstrating ultra-fast ion transport behavior,' Fan Xiulin explained. Excellent fast-charging performance also means that the low-temperature charging and discharging performance of lithium-ion batteries is excellent.
