The average capacity utilisation rate of Chinese mines stood at 54.8% in April, up 1.9 percentage points from March. The iron ore concentrate output stood at around 20.2 million mt in April, a growth of 57,000 mt from March.
The main reasons for the increase in capacity utilisation rates in April include 1) The impact of explosives control continued to weaken in some areas, and the supply of ROM increased, driving the recovery of capacity utilisation rates in Inner Mongolia, Liaoning and Hebei; 2) The mines whose production had been restricted by rectification on environmental protection and production safety gradually resumed production or increased production, leading to a recovery in capacity utilisation rates. For example, after the end of the environmental protection inspections in Shanxi, most local mines resumed production; as the impact of previous safety inspections abated, some mines in Jilin began to increase production in April; most mines in Jiangxi, Hubei and Hunan resumed production after environmental protection-related rectification in early April, which led to a recovery in capacity utilisation. 3) Some mines restarted production in April after completing technological upgrading or tailings reuse, which also led to a recovery in their capacity utilisation rates. Output at some mines in Inner Mongolia, Shanxi and Shandong all increased.
