Recently, the Panama Construction Workers Union blocked a highway and marched in front of the Congress on Monday, demanding that legislators reject the contract signed with the Canadian mining company First Quantum Minerals Ltd.
Union leader Saul Mendez said the contract infringes on national sovereignty, granting the company control over land, air and sea, and not taking enough measures to protect the rights of workers.
The Panama Legislative Business Committee is discussing the contract and has held information-rich meetings with affected communities over the past two weeks. The contract needs three votes in the legislative session to become law.
President Laurentino Cortizo said over the weekend that he will wait for the recommendations of the Business Committee before deciding whether to withdraw the bill from Congress.
