US-based industrial innovation company Brimstone has announced a significant plan to produce smelter-grade alumina using its innovative process that leverages the US's abundant carbon-free calcium silicate rocks, reducing reliance on imported bauxite. This facility could become the first new domestic source of smelter-grade alumina in the US in decades. The innovative process not only decreases the demand for bauxite but also lowers production costs, optimizes logistics, and minimizes waste.

Brimstone is expected to begin pilot operations in 2025 and aims to complete the construction of a commercial demonstration plant by 2030. The company has secured an initial grant of $8.7 million from the US Department of Energy, with total future funding potentially reaching $189 million, while the site selection and construction of the demonstration project are expected to cost $378 million.
