SHANGHAI, Apr 17 (SMM) – Rising rare earth prices have driven up the costs of downstream motor manufacturers in the past two years, thus some onshore wind turbine producers have adopted semi-direct drive and doubly-fed motors to replace rare earth permanent magnet generators.
Permanent magnet direct drive is more suitable for use in offshore wind turbines. This is because offshore wind turbines tend to be larger due to its vulnerability to corrosion and higher maintenance costs than onshore wind turbines.
With the continuous growth of new offshore wind power capacity, permanent magnet wind turbine technology will undoubtedly benefit, which will boost the demand for high-end NdFeB magnets.
