According to foreign media TheElec, South Korean company LG Energy is going to work with General Motors to develop a new lithium battery with a length of 50cm.
It is reported that this battery can shorten the traditional electric vehicle battery pack from the initial three-column arrangement to two columns, reducing the difficulty of processing the battery pack and increasing its energy density at the same time. According to media sources, LG said the new battery will use NCMA cathode material, which contains elements such as nickel, cobalt, manganese and aluminum, while nickel will account for more than 80 per cent of the mass.
Compared with the traditional battery, the battery can save the cost of electric vehicle and increase its energy density to some extent. GM said its Ultium pure electric platform will use 12 modules made up of the batteries, which will increase the battery life of electric vehicles by 10 per cent. In addition, after mass production, GM is also preparing to equip it with Cadillac, Chevrolet and GMC SUV models.
Before the partnership, on April 17, General Motors and LG Energy announced plans to invest more than $2.3 billion in Tennessee to build a second American electric vehicle battery plant, Ultium, in response to the battery shortage.
It is reported that the plant will be operational by the end of 2023, covering an area of about 2.8 million square feet. Combined with previous predictions by Morgan Stanley analysts that "there may be a shortage of battery supply compared with the number of new electric vehicles that will be put on the market in the next few years", the Ultium battery factory jointly established by GM and LG will create inestimable value in the future.
It is worth mentioning that at a time when the new energy vehicle market is driving the growing popularity of the lithium battery field, SMM research shows that domestic battery-grade lithium carbonate production rose 62% month-on-month in March, and domestic lithium carbonate production is expected to continue to hit a new high in April, with total output expected to reach 18450 tons, an increase of 5% month-on-month, of which battery-grade production is expected to be about 11020 tons, with a further increase of 4% month-on-month.
