SHANGHAI, Apr 3 (SMM) - Stainless steel scrap prices kept falling following the stainless steel prices and dropped further since Tsingshan quoted the molten steel at 10,500 yuan/mt. Scrap supply decreased due to the production cuts of stainless steel mills. In the meantime, scrap traders were less willing to restock amid the losses, and they carried low inventory of scrap. Last week, traded price of high-grade NPI declined to 1,090 yuan/mtu (tax included, delivery to factory), NPI traders dumped their goods as the market supply stood high, and stainless steel mills cut production due to great losses. Chinese NPI plants suffered losses last week. And the profit margins will only grow somewhat if the mines cut their quotes. It is expected that the NPI prices will be stable with some downward potential in the near future. SMM believes that the cost efficiency of stainless steel scrap will be maintained at the current level in the short term.
