[Minor metal] China's Silicon Metal Exports in July 2009 by Country

BEIJING, Sept. 9 -- China's stainless steel sector has been developing rapidly in recent years, with production expected to exceed seven million tons during 2009, according to Li Cheng, president of the Stainless Steel Council of the China Special Steel Enterprises Association (CSSEA).
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; CSSEA figures show China's stainless steel production jumped to the first place in the world during 2006. In 2008, production reached 6.94 million tons, taking a 26 percent stake of the world's total, compared with 300,000 tons 10 years earlier. The figure reached 4.06 million tons in the first half of 2009 and is expected to exceed seven million tons for the whole year.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; However, Li pointed out that China's stainless steel sector is facing two major challenges amid the global financial crisis.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; China is short of nickel and chromium, which are major raw materials for stainless steel production. Nickel consumption in the country reached 320,000 tons in 2008, while production was only 128,700 tons. Not to mention that a certain part was melted from imported nickel ores.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Li called for lower taxes for imports of raw materials and scrap stainless steel, as well as support for overseas investment in nickel and chromium ores.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; At the same time, the stainless steel sector is facing a severe problem of surplus capacity. China's stainless steel production capacity has now exceeded 13 million tons. In comparison, production was less than seven million tons in 2008.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &quot;China needs to eliminate almost seven million tons of stainless steel production capacity,&quot; said Chai Zhiyong, deputy general manager of Shanxi Taigang Stainless Steel. He suggested the government take measures to restrain investment and solve the surplus capacity problem.
