LONDON/NEW YORK, Sept. 3 -- Copper fell for to a one-week low in London as a drop in global equity markets and increased inventories of the metal raised concerns that the economic recovery may stagnate.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The price of copper moved in the same direction as the MSCI World Index of shares in each of the past nine weeks. The index slid for a third day today, falling as much as 1.2 percent to the lowest level in almost two weeks. Stockpiles of the metal monitored by the London Metal Exchange have jumped 18 percent since mid-July to 302,950 metric tons, the most since June 4.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &quot;Copper is down today in sympathy with the stock market and as we've seen LME inventories start to rise,&quot; said Lannie Cohen, the president of Capitol Commodity Services Inc. in Indianapolis. &quot;Those are the key factors driving copper.'&quot;
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Copper for three-month delivery on the London Metal Exchange dropped $26, or 0.4 percent, to $6,174 a ton ($2.80 a pound). The metal fell 5.7 percent since reaching an 11-month high of $6,549 on Aug. 28.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Prices erased earlier gains as U.S. equity markets fluctuated between gains and losses.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; On the New York Mercantile Exchange's Comex division, copper for December delivery rose 0.75 cent, or 0.3 percent, to $2.826 a pound. Earlier, the metal slid as much as 2.8 percent to $2.74, the lowest price for a most-active contract since Aug. 21.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Nickel Decline 
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; On the LME, nickel prices lost as much as 3.2 percent to $17,663 a ton, the lowest price since July 31. Stockpiles tracked by the LME have climbed 48 percent this year to 115,710 tons, a 14-year high. They dropped 0.5 percent today.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Baoshan Iron &amp; Steel Co., China's largest mill, is boosting output of ferritic steel, which contains no nickel, to 60 percent of its stainless-steel production, from 40 percent, Lou Dingbo, general manager of the business, said today in an interview in Shanghai. The stainless-steel industry is the biggest user of nickel.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; &quot;Metals are getting a bit too long&quot; after investors and hedge funds increased industrial-metals purchases in recent months, said Kevin Tuohy, a trader at MF Global Ltd. in London.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Hedge funds and other large speculators have reduced net- short positions, or bets prices will fall, by 94 percent since late June. Short positions outnumbered long positions by 1,244 New York copper contracts as of Aug. 28, compared with 21,735 on June 26, Commodity Futures Trading Commission data show.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Among other LME metals for three-month delivery, zinc prices fell. Aluminum was little changed, and lead and tin rose.
