China May Refined Copper Imports Hit Record 337,230 T

LONDON, June 22 -- It is reported that nickel price has risen to the high level of USD 15,755 per tonne as recorded on the end September 2008. LME nickel prices on June 10th 2009 were USD 15,395 per tonne for cash and USD 15,425 per tonne for three month futures, having reached high levels after an interval of 8 months.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; A leading analyst forecasted in spring of this year that LME nickel prices in 2009 would be on the levels of USD 11,000 to USD 13,000 per tonne, but the real prices at present have exceeded far from this anticipation. The background is thought to be due to the aggressive demand from China to import nickel in order to accord with the fact, which China has turned to increase their production of stainless steel.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Under the present situation which speculative funds to invest have a surplus, the positive purchases of copper cathodes by China have stimulated to rise prices of such base metals as zinc and nickel and these market prices as rebounded have been maintained from April but it is also not negligible that, in expectation of higher nickel price for the future, nickel producers are now reducing their pressure on nickel sales for forward deliveries at LME.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Under the circumstances as mentioned above, nickel was once in the black period arisen from October 2008 but, after it has passed 8 months, the world market of nickel has now revived with a bright color. Eramet has recently assumed that the world supply of nickel in 2009 will have a surplus of 6,300 tonnes.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; LME nickel prices have risen to a higher level than USD 15,000 per tonne as mentioned above but the enterprises, which are able to gain a profitability from nickel production on this price level, are supposed to have been restricted to a certain extent. It is anticipated that nickel producers will continue to reduce their nickel production, but a recovery of nickel contained pig iron to be produced in China with the lowest cost in the world is thought to put a considerable influence on nickel price in the second half of 2009. It is no doubt that this nickel-contained pig iron produced in China is a wild card for nickel price.
