SHANGHAI, May 21 -- Maintenance work being carried out by major domestic copper smelters may reduce the country's refined copper output and support short-term spot treatment and refining charges which overseas miners pay Chinese copper smelters.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; An unnamed employee from Jinlong Copper Co Ltd a subsidiary of China's largest copper smelter Tongling Nonferrous Metals Group Holdings Co Ltd said "The planned maintenance period on all our crude copper smelting facilities and part of our copper refining facilities started on May 7th and will end on May 27th. The disruption should reduce our refined copper output by about 10,000 tonnes in May."
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Jinlong Copper produced 302,000 tons of refined copper in 2008 and aims to produce 350,000 tons this year. Meanwhile, Baiyin Nonferrous Metal Co Ltd another copper smelter is to shortly begin maintenance and expansion work on its copper production facilities for a period of 25 days from late May.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; According to the trader during that time, the company's production of refined copper will drop by 5,500 tonnes. After the maintenance period, Baiyin's annual copper smelting capacity will jump from 80,000 tonnes to 100,000 tonnes.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The trader said "Domestic copper smelters may be publicizing the maintenance periods in an attempt to boost currently low spot TC/RCs. In theory, maintenance work should lower refined copper output and reduce demand for copper concentrate. But, in reality, smelters may keep refined copper output at the same level due to economies of scale factors. Smelters simply might not report their full refined copper production."
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; The trader expects China's refined copper output to see a month-on-month fall in May and spot TC/RCs to rise in the short term. China produced 338,300 tons of refined copper in April up by 2.9%MoM and 5.9%YoY.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Current spot TC/RCs stand at 35/3.5, up slightly from 22/2.2 recorded in early May. The trader added that few copper smelters are buying spot copper concentrate from overseas miners because of the low TC/RCs.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; An employee surnamed Mr Xu from Jiangxi Copper Co Ltd another major copper smelter, said that in 2009, spot TC/RCs are unlikely to reach 75/ 7.5, the level agreed on for this year's contract TC/TCs by major domestic copper smelters and overseas miners in January, as there will be between 500,000 tonnes and 600,000 tons worth of new copper production facilities starting operations before the end of the year, which will boost demand for copper concentrate and depress spot TC/TCs.
&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp; Furthermore, Mr Xu said that Chinese companies plan to begin building work this year on new copper smelting facilities with total annual capacity as high as 400,000 tonnes.
