BAHRAIN, Sept. 25 -- The launch of a physically backed exchange traded product for aluminum would likely have a small but limited impact on the market, an analyst at Barclays Capital said Tuesday.
Speaking at the Metal Bulletin aluminum conference in Bahrain, Gayle Berry said that a exchange traded product would account for around just 0.2% of the value of the physical market.
&quot;If it's as popular as the paper market, it would need about 110,000 metric tons of metal to back it,&quot; she said. &quot;We'd probably see some short covering [if an exchange-traded product is launched] but we would have to see how popular it proved to be before seeing whether there was any impact on the aluminum market,&quot; she added.
Credit Suisse Group and Swiss trader Glencore International AG are in the process of launching a physical aluminum exchange traded fund. The product is currently with the regulator. Credit Suisse would be the sole clearer.
ETFs are a recent phenomenon in the commodities sector--especially for gold--but they haven't yet been extended to base metals like aluminum, copper and nickel. With a surplus of aluminum on world markets, companies and banks are looking at physical ETFs as a vehicle to soak up a portion of supply and lend a prop to prices.
