SANTIAGO, Aug 09, 2010 (Dow Jones Commodities News Select via Comtex) -- Following an accident that left 33 miners trapped late last week, the government will revamp the National Geological Service, which acts as the mining safety oversight body, President Sebastian Pinera said Monday.
A cave-in at the mid-sized San Esteban copper and gold mine near the northern Chilean city of Copiapo that trapped the 33 miners has highlighted that the country needs to improve its mining safety standards.
While large-scale miners, most of which are units of global mining giants, are known for their strict safety standards and low accident rate, the smaller outfits often lag in ensuring workers' safety.
&quot;We well speed up redesigning safety-related legislation and,..., carry out deep reforms to the Sernageomin [geological service],&quot; Pinera said at a public appearance Monday.
Sernageomin, which surveys the country's geology and enforces safety standards, is understaffed and operates with a limited budget.
Both Pinera and Mining Minister Laurence Golborne, who's on site at the mine overseeing rescue efforts, said the government will do everything it can to rescue the trapped workers.
&quot;We will do everything that is humanly possible to rescue them,&quot; Pinera said.
Private mining companies such as Anglo American plc (AAUK) and Antofagasta plc (ANTO.LN) have seen crews to assist rescue efforts, local media have reported.
Golborne, speaking to Radio Agricultura, said there are crews working on drilling small holes to a shelter several hundred meters below ground where the miners could be trapped.
&quot;The process is technically complex, but we've got the best people on the job so let's have faith that we'll make it and that when the mine collapsed the men were able to make it to the shelter,&quot; he told the radio station.
Over the weekend, rescue workers attempted to go down ventilation shafts but had to scrap their efforts after those caved in.
