Japan May Zinc Production Up 18% On Month -METI

SINGAPORE, June 30 -- Japan's zinc production in May rose 18% from a month earlier to 51,670 metric tons, according to preliminary data released Wednesday by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry. Production was down 2% compared with last May.

Shipments from Japanese zinc smelters rose 3% on month and 27% on year to 48,079 tons in May.

Zinc inventories rose 20% on month but were down 61% on year at 21,531 tons in May.

At 0250 GMT London Metal Exchange three-month zinc was at $1,765/ton, up $22 since Tuesday's kerb.
