LIMA, June 28 (Reuters) - Shougang Hierro Peru (SHP.LM), the country's only iron ore producer, said an indefinite strike that started on Monday to demand higher wages has halted production.

"The strike started at 8:00 a.m. (1300 GMT) and production has been halted," Raul Vera, Shougang's general manager, told Reuters.

Some 1,600 workers at the company's Marcona mine in southern Peru had joined the strike, union federation leader Luis Castillo said. Workers at Shougang Hierro Peru, the local subsidiary of China's Shougang Group, downed tools for three days in March demanding better wages.

Peru is a leading exporter of copper, gold and silver.
