ZHENGZHOU, May 13 -- The Henan Provincial government has decided to finish consolidating the coal industry before the end of June this year, and to set up three large-scale coal enterprises with an annual output of 50 million tons each by the end of this year, sources reported recently.

The coal resources of the leading enterprises will account for 85% of the total provincial resources, and their output will account for 75% of the total output after the planned acquisitions and mergers.

Coal enterprises that have an annual output of more than 1 million tons will take over coal firms whose annual outputs are between 150,000 tons and 300,000 tons.

Small-scale coal mines currently account for 84.5% the 793 coal mines in Henan Province.

Henan's coal industry has several problems: mines are small, the number of mines is large, and safety systems are weak.
