Strikes Continue At Peru's Shougang And Buenaventura Mines

Mar 30, 2010 (Dow Jones Commodities News via Comtex) -- LIMA (Dow Jones)-Strikes at Peru's Shougang Hierro Peru SAA (SHPC1.VL) and a mine owned by Compania de Minas Buenaventura SAA (BVN) are continuing Tuesday.

The strike at Shougang, Peru's only iron producer, is entering its second day, said Luis Castillo, general secretary of Peru's National Federation of Mining. Castillo also said a strike at Buenaventura's Orcopampa gold mine had entered its third day. A strike at Doe Run's Cobriza copper mine is now its eighth day.

Meanwhile, a strike at copper producer Sociedad Minera Cerro Verde (CVERDEC1.VL), majority controlled by Freeport McMoRan Copper and Gold (FCX), is expected to go ahead Wednesday.

Peru is the world's largest producer of silver, its second largest copper producer and sixth largest gold producer. It also produces large amount of other minerals, such as zinc, tin and molybdenum.
