SHANGHAI, Sept. 25 (SMM) --
Bauxite:
According to China Customs, China's imports of bauxite were 1.6 million mt during August, down 38.48% YoY, and down 17.34% MoM. MoM declines in bauxite imports are not an indication that demand for imported bauxite has fallen given the relatively high bauxite inventories at many enterprises. However, bauxite imports have consistently experienced declines on a yearly basis during 2009, and this is more of an indication of a rising self-sufficiency rate for China's bauxite resources, as well as a sign of increasing alumina imports.
Aluminum:
According to China Customs, China's imports of aluminum were 117.2kt during August, and continue to fall on a monthly basis. Aluminum imports are expected to decline slightly for the foreseeable future in light of the recent unfavorable SHFE/LME aluminum price ratio.
