SHANGHAI, July 24 (SMM) --
Bauxite:
According to China Customs, China's bauxite imports were 1.53 million mt during June, down 4.47% YoY, and down 0.79% MoM. Bauxite imports have been stable recently, but have experienced declines on a yearly basis, since most domestic factories with new alumina capacity are sourcing bauxite from their own mines. In this context, bauxite will likely be in short supply for the foreseeable future given the scarcity of bauxite resources in China.
Alumina:
According to China Customs, China's alumina imports were 526.1kt during June, up 24.03% YoY, and up 9.44% MoM. Alumina imports remained high, attributed to higher domestic aluminum prices and restart of idled aluminum capacity. Large volumes of alumina have entered domestic markets, and according to a CBI survey, China's total alumina imports will reach 5.5 million mt in 2009, up 1 million mt compared to 2008.
Aluminum:
According to China Customs, China's aluminum imports were 267.9kt during June, up 2479.42% YoY, and up 3.38% MoM. CBI predicts aluminum imports will be down significantly during August, with imports expected at 100-150kt.
