[Cobalt] China's unwrought cobalt imports fell 37% MoM in September 2026, while exports rose 9% MoM

Published: Oct 20, 2026 18:24 (GMT+8)

China's imports of unwrought cobalt were approximately 642 mt in September 2026, down 37% MoM and down 25% YoY. By country, the top three sources of refined cobalt imports were Indonesia, Russia, and Australia, with imports of 402 mt, 123 mt, and 50 mt, respectively. In September, the price spread between refined cobalt in China and ex-China widened further, with theoretical import losses expanding to approximately 150,000 yuan/mt, leading to a significant reduction in market import supply. However, imports remained above 600 mt as some brands of refined cobalt still had to be shipped to China due to long-term contracts or operational requirements, and Indonesian material continued to flow in through bonded channels. In terms of average import price, China's average import price of unwrought cobalt was $51,313/mt in September 2026, down 0.85% MoM. Cumulative imports in January-September 2026 totaled 10,416 mt, up 93% YoY.

On the export side, China's exports of unwrought cobalt were approximately 527 mt in September 2026, up 9% MoM and down 1% YoY. By country, the top three export destinations were the US, the Netherlands, and India, with exports of 212 mt, 202 mt, and 41 mt, respectively. In terms of average export price, China's average export price of unwrought cobalt was $53,876/mt in September 2026, down 1.14% MoM. Cumulative exports in January-September 2026 totaled 3,990 mt, down 70% YoY.

[SMM Cobalt-Lithium Morning Meeting Summary] Industry chain prices consolidate, differentiated demand under pressure, energy storage market continues to improve
Battery industry chain prices consolidated with divergence this week. Market sentiment recovered somewhat, but overall demand remained weak. The average spot price of battery-grade carbonate fell to **91,700 yuan/mt**, down **4.6%** WoW, with inventory dropping to **125,391 mt** and destocking accelerating. Electrolytic metal prices rebounded to a high of **238,000 yuan/mt**, but recovering supply and insufficient demand capped the gains. Ternary cathode precursor and cathode material prices remained weak, with enterprises lowering production schedules; iron phosphate-based cathode production stayed stable, supported by energy storage demand. Anode and separator prices held steady, while electrolyte continued to decline under pressure from weaker raw materials. The sodium-ion battery market saw rising volumes but weakening prices, with November battery cell production expected to grow **27%** MoM. Recycling market transactions were sluggish, and the overall industry chain continued to face pressure from insufficient demand and inventory adjustments.

[SMM Cobalt Morning Meeting Summary] Market prices rebound, fundamentals under pressure, supply-demand tug-of-war continues to intensify
Market sentiment along the industry chain recovered somewhat this week, but supply-demand fundamentals remained weak. Refined metal prices rebounded from around 200,000 yuan/mt, peaking at 238,000 yuan/mt before pulling back to consolidate, with production recovery and expectations of inventory buildup capping the uptrend. The price center for intermediate products edged lower, and the price spread between buyers and sellers persisted. Sulphate offers rebounded to 43,000-45,000 yuan/mt, but downstream purchase willingness was insufficient. Co3O4 and metal powder prices gradually stabilized, with limited improvement in actual transactions. Affected by weak end-use demand, ternary cathode precursors and cathode materials continued to trend lower, and enterprises became more cautious in their production schedules. In the short term, the market still faces multiple pressures from supply growth, slow inventory digestion, and insufficient demand, and the sustainability of the price rebound remains to be verified.

[SMM Market Flash] India Approves Capex Support for Lithium and Nickel Processing Plants
India’s Union Cabinet on November 4 approved a "Capex Support Scheme to Promote Critical Mineral Processing" worth INR 28.14 billion (about US$297 million), running from FY2026-27 to FY2030-31. The scheme will back two lithium plants with at least 30,000 tonnes of capacity each and two nickel plants with at least 50,000 tonnes each, all turning ores and intermediates into high-purity compounds. Cobalt will be recovered as a by-product of nickel processing. The subsidy covers 30% of eligible investment, capped at INR 5 billion per lithium project and INR 9 billion per nickel project. Beneficiaries will be chosen through technical evaluation followed by competitive bidding. The government said the plants will serve e-mobility, battery storage, electronics, defence and specialty steel, as concentrated critical mineral mining leaves supply chains exposed.
