[SMM PV Flash] Finland Introduces Grid-Forming Requirements for Solar in Weak Grids

Published: Oct 16, 2026 10:13 (GMT+8)
Finnish transmission system operator Fingrid has introduced new technical requirements requiring certain new large-scale wind and solar projects connected to weak-grid areas to provide grid-forming support. The rules apply to Type D plants where the equivalent short-circuit ratio at the connection point is below 1.0, while operating projects and those with existing connection agreements are exempt. Developers can meet the requirement through battery storage, energy-storage-equipped STATCOMs or synchronous machines, with higher support levels required as grid strength declines. The rules indicate that grid requirements for inverter-based renewables are expanding beyond conventional connection and fault ride-through capability toward active voltage and system stability support.

[SMM Analysis] Silver Down Nearly 20% From Stage High: Why Are Solar Cell Prices Not Following?
Silver prices fell 19.6% from August 27 to October 15, lowering solar cell costs, yet cell prices held steady. SMM data show 210R prices steady at RMB 0.310/W, while 210N prices rose and 183 prices edged down. Production line upgrades and output cuts tightened supply, while export orders and utility-scale demand supported key formats. Near-term pricing remains driven by supply-demand fundamentals.
