【Flash | Weather Disruptions Keep Chilean Molybdenum Supply Tight】

Published: Sep 22, 2026 14:18 (GMT+8)
SMM learned from the market intelligence team of a major overseas mine operator that above-normal rainfall and severe weather across parts of South America in July and August disrupted production and maintenance schedules at some mines. Regional operations improved in September, but mine supply remained tight. Some copper-molybdenum mines still face post-weather maintenance requirements, which may continue to constrain Chilean by-product molybdenum supply and support elevated overseas molybdenum prices.

Hold Back from Selling, Hold Prices Firm; Tantalum Prices Rise Slowly; High-End Leads Gains, Traditional Under Pressure [SMM Analysis]
[SMM Tantalum Market Analysis: Holding Back Sales and Firm Prices Drive Gradual Tantalum Price Gains; High-End Leads While Traditional Products Stay Under Pressure] Tantalum ore prices have recently shown an upward trend. According to market feedback, influenced by industry meetings, upstream miners are holding back from selling amid strong sentiment, actively controlling tantalum ore supply and reducing external shipments. The tightening ore supply has supported stronger prices. Meanwhile, since entering September, some downstream demand has gradually recovered. Under the combined effect of supply and demand, tantalum prices have shown a slow ramp-up trend.

【Flash | IQE Expands Indium Phosphide (InP) Capacity as AI Datacenter Demand Accelerates】
IQE reported H1 2026 revenue of £64.6 million, up 43% YoY, while Photonics revenue rose 45% to £38.5 million, supported by US defence funding releases and continued growth in AI and datacenter markets. The company said strong InP demand is driving volume growth and that existing tooling will be converted in H2 to increase InP capacity for significant AI and datacenter demand. IQE expects FY2026 revenue growth above 30%. SMM views simultaneous growth in InP volumes and capacity as direct support for medium-term high-purity indium demand. However, IQE did not disclose InP shipment volumes or indium feedstock consumption, preventing a quantitative estimate.
