[India Secures 1.9 Million Tonne Steel Quota Under EU Tariff Regime]

Published: Sep 18, 2026 11:33
India has secured a country-specific tariff-rate quota of 1.9 million tonnes a year for steel exports to the EU, plus 0.9 million tonnes via residual quotas, giving total access of 2.8 million tonnes — over 80% of India's EU-bound exports, about 3 million tonnes last fiscal year. Shipping has begun after New Delhi won front-loaded benefits before the India-EU FTA's ratification. The quota covers hot-rolled, cold-rolled, coated and tin mill sheets, stainless steel, rebar, wire rod and tubes; uncovered grades may use residual or FTA-preferential quotas. The EU's Steel Overcapacity Regulation took effect on 1 July 2026, granting 18.3 million tonnes of duty-free imports with a 50% duty beyond, plus melt-and-pour origin rules. FTA talks ended on 27 January.

【Flash | Peru’s Molybdenum Export Volumes Jump 75.3% YoY in July】
Peru’s Central Reserve Bank reported that the country’s molybdenum export volume rose 75.3% year on year in July 2026, in line with higher production. The increase points to stronger outbound shipments that month. Export volume and mine production are different measures, however, and one month’s shipments do not establish the outlook for future output or global supply.

[SMM Analysis] Black Sea breakdown: "unable to ship" replaces "unable to produce", global steel trade flows redrawn
Since late July 2026, the two-way disruption to the Black Sea steel supply chain has triggered a chain reaction in global markets; the key factor behind the disruption to trade flows lies not only in the loss of production capacity, but also in the fact that soaring freight costs and war-risk premiums have completely eroded the arbitrage opportunities. This disruption has led to a fundamental reorganisation of global trade flows in semi-finished steel products.
