[SMM Energy Flash] Natural Power Wins Ground Survey Contract for 2 GW UK HVDC Link

Published: Aug 31, 2026 23:56 (GMT+8)
Renewable energy consultancy Natural Power has secured a contract from SSEN Transmission to conduct ground investigation works for the onshore section of the planned Eastern Green Link 5 (EGL5) high-voltage direct current (HVDC) project in the UK. The link is designed to transfer up to 2 GW of electricity, with investigation works covering the proposed onshore cable route and providing geotechnical and geoenvironmental data for the project’s design and development. Physical survey works are scheduled to begin around the end of August 2026. EGL5 forms part of wider investment in Britain’s transmission network aimed at increasing grid capacity and enabling greater volumes of renewable electricity to be transported to demand centres.

[US media: Broadcom seeks over $50 billion in financing for custom chip R&D for OpenAI]
According to The Wall Street Journal, citing people familiar with the matter, Broadcom (AVGO.O) has in recent weeks been seeking more than $50 billion in financing for custom AI chips co-developed with OpenAI, and institutions including Apollo and Blackstone have held discussions about participating in the financing. Negotiations are still in an early stage, and the financing size may be adjusted. The financing could cover several gigawatts of OpenAI custom chip capacity and is expected to be completed as early as the end of this year. OpenAI internally calls the chip project "Nexus," with the first- and second-generation chips codenamed Jalapeño and Serrano, respectively. OpenAI and Broadcom previously announced a partnership to develop a 10-gigawatt custom chip system, with deployment planned to run from H2 2026 through the end of 2029.

Samsung Electronics released its preliminary Q3 results on Thursday. The company's Q3 operating profit surged 783% YoY and rose 20.01% QoQ, slightly beating analyst expectations, driven mainly by strong earnings growth in its memory business amid surging demand for AI chips. According to regulatory filings, the world's largest memory chipmaker expects operating profit of 107.4 trillion won (about $80.17 billion) for the July-September quarter, compared to a market forecast of 106.1 trillion won, marking Samsung's fourth consecutive quarter of record operating profit. Its Q3 revenue came in at 195 trillion won, up 127% YoY, versus market expectations of 199 trillion won. Samsung Electronics will release its full earnings report later this month.
