[Solar: Greece's solar boom continues with 724 MW added in May despite curtailment]

Greece added 724 MW of solar in May alone, alongside 65 MW of wind, bringing total renewable capacity to 18.3 GW including 11.6 GW of solar, according to the latest data from grid operator DAPEEP. The market expects record renewable additions of around 4 GW this year, up from the previous record of 2.73 GW set in 2024. Storage buildout is lagging badly, with only about 600 MW of two-hour BESS in operation, expected to reach 1.1 GW by year-end — far behind the pace of solar deployment. Some smaller generators lost up to 80% of revenue in spring months amid curtailment and negative prices, raising bank concerns over project viability.

The White House said the move addresses cybersecurity and operational risks, and the order also directs the Energy Secretary to impose conditions on the continued use of already-installed equipment. Reuters noted this is Washington's latest action targeting Chinese technology risks, after the European Commission earlier this year banned Chinese-made inverters from publicly funded energy projects. Domestic manufacturers such as SolarEdge and Enphase are expected to benefit.

[Energy Storage: Saudi Arabia's SPPC finalizes 2 GW/8 GWh battery storage portfolio worth over $1.16 billion]

Saudi Power Procurement Company (SPPC) has finalized four 15-year Storage Services Agreements covering a combined 2 GW/8 GWh of utility-scale battery storage, marking the first phase of the Kingdom's large-scale BESS programme. The four projects, each rated at 500 MW/2,000 MWh under a build-own-operate model, represent an investment of more than $1.16 billion. Three projects (Al Muwyah, Haden and Al Kahafa) went to a consortium of Saudi Energy, ACWA Power and Al Sharif, while the fourth, Al Khushaybi, was awarded to a consortium of France's Engie and Haji Abdullah Alireza & Co. Saudi Arabia targets 48 GWh of storage by 2030, with this portfolio representing about one-sixth of that goal.
