SMM August 26 news:

Today, SMM A00 spot aluminum prices closed at 23,870 yuan/mt, up 130 yuan/mt from the previous trading day, and China's aluminum scrap market prices generally followed the uptick. In terms of price differences, on August 26, the price difference between A00 aluminum and mixed aluminum extrusion scrap free of paint in Foshan was 2,354 yuan/mt, and the price difference between A00 aluminum and shredded aluminum tense scrap was 1,133 yuan/mt. On imports and exports, according to SMM customs data, China's aluminum scrap imports in July 2026 totaled about 119,600 mt, down from 133,000 mt in June, mainly due to the earlier price spread inversion between Chinese and overseas markets and shipping delays, with overseas high-quality scrap supply remaining low. Affected by the UAE's aluminum scrap export ban and the EU's tariff hike policy, the contraction effect of European and Middle Eastern supply continued to manifest, further consolidating Southeast Asia's position as a major supplementary source. The aluminum scrap market is expected to remain in a narrow sideways pattern this week, with demand suppressing and costs underpinning. Currently at the tail end of the traditional off-season, terminal orders are unlikely to see substantial growth; scrap utilization enterprises continue their purchasing-as-needed strategy with cautious sentiment, and the pre-season effect is not yet evident, requiring observation for future orders. The main operating range for shredded aluminum tense scrap (priced based on aluminum content) is expected to hover around 19,900-20,700 yuan/mt.

【SMM Aluminum Flash News】Canada to Impose Retaliatory Tariffs on $20B Worth of US Goods, Launches $5.4B Aid Package
Ottawa, August 25 (Xinhua) -- The Canadian federal government announced on the 25th that it will impose retaliatory tariffs on more than 700 U.S. goods worth CAD 27.6 billion (approximately USD 20 billion), and simultaneously launch a CAD 7.5 billion (approximately USD 5.4 billion) aid package for businesses and workers. Canadian federal officials stated that the total value of U.S. goods affected by the retaliatory tariffs is equivalent to the value of goods subject to the 50% tariff imposed by the U.S. on Canada, achieving a "reciprocal" countermeasure. The Canadian tariff retaliatory measures will officially take effect on September 8. Canadian Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne stated that the retaliatory tariffs and the multi-billion dollar comprehensive aid package will effectively protect domestic workers, farmers, families, and businesses. According to the retaliatory tariff list released by the Canadian Ministry of Finance, these targeted retaliatory tariffs mainly focus on steel and aluminum, dairy products, home appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, plastics, and electronic products, with tariff rates of 15%, 25%, and 50%. Among these measures, tariffs on most steel and aluminum products imported from the United States will increase from 25% to 50%; dairy products such as cheese, fish, seafood, and some steel and aluminum derivatives will be subject to a 25% tariff; other existing retaliatory tariffs, including those on U.S. automobiles, will remain in effect.
