Colombian coal industry association Fenalcarbon said on 19 August that the country’s annual coal production could recover to 90 Mt by 2030 if the government adjusts taxation, lowers freight and port costs, improves mining licensing and strengthens controls on illegal mining. This would represent an increase of 37 Mt, or approximately 69.8%, from the association’s 2026 forecast of 53 Mt.
With around 90%–95% of Colombia’s coal output destined for export, the projected production increase could exert downward pressure on seaborne coal prices over the medium to long term if realised. However, the forecast depends on multiple policy reforms. The government has so far only said it is reviewing around 330 decrees affecting the mining and power sectors and plans to remove the ban on coal exports to Israel.
