US Treasury yields shot up, precious metals futures came under pressure, and spot platinum market consumption was weak [SMM Daily Review]

Platinum prices traded in the doldrums today. The long-end U.S. Treasury yields shot up significantly, with the 10-year yield rising to around 4.74% and the 30-year yield touching 5.33%, reaching a level not seen since 2007. Precious metals futures fell under pressure. In the morning session, the most-traded GFEX platinum contract PT2610 closed at 425.3 yuan/g, down 2.44%. The price spread between the best ask of SGE platinum 9995 and the GFEX PT2610 contract remained around 3 yuan/g.
Spot side, mainstream quotations for platinum were at a discount of 2.5-1.5 yuan/g against the PT2610 contract. Suppliers' offer discounts narrowed only slightly from the previous trading day. Some downstream enterprises had already completed stockpiling yesterday, as futures prices fell. Today, although futures continued under pressure, consumption was weak. Suppliers' shipments of high-priced goods faced obstacles, warehouse warrant premiums were on the high side, and mainstream quotations were mostly around a discount of 1.5 yuan/g against the most-traded contract. Overall, trading in the platinum spot market today was relatively sluggish.

Prices and Supply Constraints Reshape Iridium and Ruthenium Markets Outlook to 2030
[SMM Flash] Iridium and ruthenium markets are facing increased price risks as elevated prices, constrained supply and evolving technologies reshape the outlook for these minor PGMs. A five-year market assessment through 2030 highlights the importance of monitoring supply, demand, stocks and technological developments. While higher prices could provide some scope to increase mine supply in the near term, longer-term production remains more complex, with primary supply exposed to developments in key producing regions including South Africa, Zimbabwe and Russia. On the demand side, record-high prices are expected to encourage greater material efficiency, substitution and technological innovation. Iridium demand remains linked to high-purity crystal growth, electrochemical applications, catalysis and the hydrogen economy, although slower development of hydrogen projects has reduced some longer-term growth expectations. Ruthenium continues to benefit from data-storage applications, particularly as AI drives demand for data infrastructure, while chemical catalysis and emerging hydrogen and ammonia applications offer additional opportunities. The market outlook to 2030 will ultimately depend on the balance between constrained mine supply and changing end-use demand. Substitution and new technologies could create downside risks for prices, while limited liquidity and the growing recognition of iridium and ruthenium as critical materials could amplify supply risks. Monitoring mine economics, technological shifts and price sensitivity across major end-use sectors will therefore remain important for producers, fabricators and consumers.
