【Rhine low water cuts Rotterdam–Duisburg coal and ore movements by about 40%; HKM turns to rail deliveries】

Published: Aug 13, 2026 16:45

SMM has learned that the navigable water depth at the Kaub gauge on Germany's Rhine River dropped to 12 centimetres on August 12, falling below the previous historic low of 25 centimetres recorded in 2018. Most vessels are now unable to transit this bottleneck section, and ships still operating on the northern stretch are typically running at approximately 20% of their cargo capacity.

Under normal conditions, roughly 24,000 tonnes of coal and iron ore are transported daily from Rotterdam to Duisburg via the inland waterway. Current daily inland waterway volumes have fallen to approximately 14,500 tonnes, representing a shortfall of around 9,500 tonnes per day against the normal level. Local enterprises are planning to arrange three return rail movements per week through to end-September, with each run transporting approximately 2,000 tonnes of coal to the HKM steelworks in Duisburg, in order to partially offset the inland waterway capacity shortfall.

Primetals Technologies to Modernize KG Steel's Cold Rolling Mill in South Korea
Primetals Technologies has signed a contract to modernize the pickling line and tandem cold rolling mill (PLTCM) at KG Steel Co.'s facility in Dangjin, South Korea, with the 18-month project covering a comprehensive upgrade of the plant's automation systems. The existing basic automation will be replaced with the SIMATIC S7-1500 platform, while new AI-supported process automation aims to improve strip thickness and flatness control across KG Steel's galvanized, tinplate, and "XTONE" pre-coated product lines. A "shadow mode" transition will run the new system alongside the old to limit production disruption during commissioning.

Vietnamese steelmaker Hoa Phat Group is planning to expand its railway and special steel rail production project in the Dung Quat Economic Zone, adding over 76.9 hectares and a further 2 million tons/year of capacity, with the expansion estimated to cost around VND 20 trillion. The existing facility, covering about 15 hectares, has a designed capacity of 700,000 tons/year and an investment of over VND 10 trillion, with rail output for high-speed lines targeted for 2027. Including this project, Hoa Phat now has seven approved projects in Dung Quat with combined planned investment near VND 194 trillion and total capacity set to reach roughly 12.8 million tons/year.

[China Iron Ore Brief] East Liaoning Iron Ore Prices May Remain in the Doldrums and Consolidate.
The dry-basis, tax-inclusive EXW price of iron ore concentrates in East Liaoning edged down to 860 yuan/mt. According to feedback from mines and beneficiation plants, the local price spread between domestic and imported ore is around 60 yuan/mt, while local steel mills generally have a relatively strong desire to bargain down prices and expect to narrow the spread to around 20 yuan/mt. Local mines and beneficiation plants are mostly selling as usual at steel mills' purchase prices. However, iron ore futures recently drifted higher, and the price spread between domestic and imported ore may continue to narrow. Local iron ore concentrate prices are expected to have limited downside room.
