Magnesium Ingot in the Doldrums, Demand Suppresses Rebound Space [SMM Magnesium Weekly Data]

Published: Aug 7, 2026 18:19
[Magnesium Ingot in the Doldrums, Demand Caps Rebound Room] This week, mainstream quotations for magnesium ingot in major producing areas were 15,800-15,900 yuan/mt, up 100 yuan/mt WoW, while FOB prices in the overseas market weakened in tandem. The Chinese market consolidated at lows overall, with smelting costs providing bottom support and leaving limited further downside room. However, producers’ hold-back-from-selling sentiment showed signs of easing, and low-priced supplies emerged. Downstream users and traders had insufficient orders and remained cautious in procurement, leaving overall trading sluggish. On the export front, the overseas summer break has not yet ended, with limited inquiries from the overseas market and evident push for lower prices from buyers outside China. Upstream, dolomite supply channels were switched, keeping raw material supply ample and prices stable. Downstream magnesium powder and magnesium alloy followed the magnesium ingot in the doldrums, with the magnesium alloy market showing supply-demand weakness and processing fees under pressure. In the short term, magnesium ingot lacks upward drivers and is expected to continue the pattern of moving sideways.

Production and Inventory Briefing

1.1 Weekly Production

From July 31 to August 6, weekly production of magnesium smelters nationwide in the sample stood at 21,940 mt, with a weekly operating rate of 71.98%, down 0.90% WoW. Our survey shows that two more primary magnesium smelters initiated maintenance shutdowns this week. Combined with ongoing production cuts at enterprises already under maintenance, the production growth from resumptions could not offset the decline caused by maintenance, leading to a further slight MoM pullback in total primary magnesium production this week. Looking ahead to next week, as several smelters plan to resume production, primary magnesium output is expected to see a minor rebound.

1.2 Weekly Inventory

1. Primary magnesium smelter inventory was basically flat WoW, with a clear divergence in inventory structure. Small and medium-sized smelters actively sold at prevailing market prices, keeping inventories low; some large smelters showed strong inclination to hold back from selling, resulting in a notable climb in their inventories. Overall, with primary magnesium production at a low level, supply pressure has eased, and combined with purchases by downstream and traders, no overall inventory buildup emerged in the market.

2. Social inventory fell 4.0% WoW, showing continued destocking. This week, magnesium ingot prices drifted lower, downstream new orders and ex-China demand showed no significant recovery, and traders' purchasing and stockpiling sentiment remained low. The market lacked growth driven by new orders overall. However, a small volume of spot rigid demand orders from downstream and traders were closed. Against the backdrop of sluggish market trading, this demand did not translate into new procurement but was fulfilled mainly by digesting existing inventories. Meanwhile, the supply side was impacted by ongoing maintenance and losses, with limited new spot cargo flowing into the market, further driving the gradual destocking of social inventory.

Magnesium Prices Rise Amid Higher Costs, But Demand Weakness Limits Momentum
【SMM Weekly Magnesium Review】This week, the mainstream offer for 9990 magnesium ingots in major production regions stands at RMB 16,050-16,150/ton, up RMB 300/ton week-on-week, with FOB offers at USD 2,280-2,380/ton and an average price of USD 2,330/ton. Driven by rising costs of coal and ferrosilicon, magnesium ingot prices climbed during the week, coupled with some restocking purchases at higher prices in foreign trade; however, the overall market sees strong supply against weak demand, transactions at high prices lack momentum, and prices have already shown signs of decline in the later period. Meanwhile, there is no substantial recovery in overseas demand, with the market mostly seeing tentative inquiries, limited actual transaction volumes and obvious price suppression from buyers, keeping trading activity muted. Downstream magnesium powder and magnesium alloys passively follow the price hike of magnesium ingots; terminal demand for magnesium powder remains sluggish, with some enterprises cutting production or suspending operations, exports restricted, and inventories rising to some extent. Spot inventories of magnesium alloys are abundant, with fierce competition among peers, die-casting enterprises face insufficient orders leading to declining operating rates, and processing fees remain under continuous pressure. In the short term, the support from costs and weak demand are locked in a game, the upward momentum of magnesium prices lacks follow-up, and the market may return to range-bound movement; subsequent focus will be placed on the release of domestic and foreign orders.
