[SMM Analysis] Ronbay Technology: LMFP Commercial Vehicle Application Advantages Confirmed, Pure-Solution Expected to See Small-Batch Vehicle Deployment This Year

Published: Aug 4, 2026 14:57
[SMM Analysis] Demand in the LFP industry chain continues to rise, but the supply-side response is significantly lagging behind. The most notable feature of the current market is that tight supply is rapidly transmitting from bottom to top, forming a sequential inversion of "battery cell production schedule > LFP cathode production schedule > iron phosphate production schedule." The slow release of LFP capacity and the iron phosphate industry segment have become the most prominent bottlenecks in the entire chain.

SMM, August 3 – Ronbay Technology released the latest guidance on the application prospects of LMFP cathode material during an institutional survey. The company explicitly stated that the material holds significant growth potential in the commercial vehicle sector, particularly in sub-segments such as heavy-duty trucks, and its light weight, high power, and low-temperature performance advantages are rapidly translating into actual orders. This statement comes nearly half a year after the company’s March projection that “pure-use solutions are expected to be onboard vehicles within the year,” as market focus now shifts from technology verification to the pace and quality of mass production.

Heavy-Duty Truck Segment Becomes Breakthrough as Cost Gap Narrows

In this survey, Ronbay Technology analyzed the suitability of LMFP for heavy-duty trucks. Since a heavy-duty single-vehicle battery capacity is typically several hundred kWh, the weight of the battery system significantly impacts cargo efficiency. LMFP, with an energy density roughly 15–20% higher than that of LFP (current mass-production levels reach 190–210 Wh/kg), can effectively reduce battery pack weight, directly improving single-vehicle freight capacity. Meanwhile, its higher voltage platform (approx. 3.8V) supports continuous high-power discharge, meeting the demands of heavy-duty truck operations such as hill climbing and heavy loads. The improved low-temperature performance addresses the pain points of cold starting and charging efficiency in northern winters.

The company noted that as commercial vehicle electrification accelerates and LMFP production scales up, the unit cost gap with LFP is steadily narrowing. Taking into account performance gains and incremental costs, the company expects the penetration rate of this material in the commercial vehicle sector to rise rapidly.

Pure-Use Solution Progress Exceeds Expectations; Leap from “Blending” to “Main Material” in 2026

Recalling this March, industry reports noted that Ronbay Technology’s LMFP business had achieved mass-production breakthroughs in multiple fields, including BEV, PHEV, commercial vehicles, power tools, 3C digital products, and high-end electric motorcycles, and specifically mentioned that verification progress of pure-use solutions for several EV clients had exceeded expectations, with small-batch installation of pure-use LMFP batteries expected in 2026. At that time, the industry generally believed that LMFP was still mainly used as a “blending” auxiliary material for ternary or LFP.

Nearly six months on, a reporter has learned from industry insiders that the customer introduction progress of Ronbay Technology’s pure-use solutions is largely in line with expectations. Some top-tier domestic automakers have completed winter and summer calibration, and models equipped with pure-use LMFP battery cells are expected to start small-batch production in Q4 2026. This means LMFP will, for the first time, independently shoulder cell performance as the primary cathode material, offering automakers a new path that combines high energy density with cost competitiveness, particularly suitable for mid-to-high-end car models in the 150,000–300,000 yuan price range.

Industry Competitive Landscape Taking Shape; Top-Tier Players Running at Full Capacity

From an industry-wide perspective, LMFP cathode materials have entered a critical phase of capacity release and order competition. In 2025, domestic LMFP shipments exceeded 30,000 mt, and are expected to reach 70,000 mt in 2026. Ronbay Technology’s cathode material sales in H1 2026 rose nearly 50% YoY, with LMFP production lines running at full capacity throughout the period, maintaining a leading market share in high-end segments both in China and overseas. Meanwhile, competitors such as Dynanonic and Easpring Technology are also accelerating capacity expansion; the industry’s “arms race” has just begun.

For Ronbay Technology, how it positions itself in the commercial vehicle pure-use market and delivers on its pure-use solution installation commitments will be a key yardstick for testing its technological leadership and commercialization capabilities in H2. The company said it will continue to advance the development of fifth-generation products and reduce costs through ultra-simplified processes to further consolidate its competitive edge in the phosphate-based cathode material space.

Andrada Extends Lithium Ridge Mineralised Trend by 50% to Nine Kilometres Following Surface Sampling【SMM Analysis】
On August 4th, Andrada Mining Limited said it has extended the identified lithium mineralized trend at its Lithium Ridge Project in Namibia's Erongo Region by 50%, from six kilometers to nine kilometers, following completion of a license wide surface sampling programme. The sampling forms part of the first stage of an earn-in agreement with Chilean lithium producer Sociedad Química y Minera de Chile SA (SQM), conducted through its subsidiary SQM Australia. Andrada is listed on the London Stock Exchange's AIM market and the Namibian Stock Exchange (NSX). Several surface samples returned lithium grades exceeding 3.5% Li₂O, with additional mineralized pegmatites identified outside the main Lithium Ridge trend. Grab samples also returned tin grades of up to 7.38% and tantalum levels of up to 3,192 parts per million. Andrada CEO Anthony Viljoen said the results confirm high-grade lithium mineralization across multiple new pegmatites, together with significant associated tin and tantalum mineralization, and complement earlier drilling that confirmed lithium mineralisation from surface to depth. Lithium Ridge is part of Andrada's broader Namibian critical minerals portfolio, alongside its established tin production operations.

SMM Daily Commentary: Spot lithium carbonate price was flat on August 4
[SMM Daily Review: Spot Lithium Carbonate Prices Unchanged on August 4] Today, SMM battery-grade spot lithium carbonate prices remained flat from the previous working day. The lithium carbonate 2609 contract opened lower at 138,800 yuan/mt today, fluctuated lower and quickly dipped, hitting a low of 137,300 yuan/mt. Subsequently, bulls stepped in, pushing prices to rebound quickly, and in the morning session, prices shot up to around 141,400 yuan/mt. Around midday, bulls and bears wrestled repeatedly in the 139,500–141,400 yuan/mt range, during which prices shot up to 141,400 yuan/mt twice but were met with selling pressure from bears each time. In the afternoon, prices pulled back amid consolidation, and in late trading, moved sideways within the 139,300–139,500 yuan/mt range. It eventually closed up 0.84% at 139,400 yuan/mt, with open interest declining by 8,337 lots. In the spot market, downstream material plants made just-in-time procurement on price dips. Inquiries were relatively active, but actual transactions showed a slowdown. Upstream spot orders continued to hold prices firm, and at the beginning of the month, deliveries were mainly based on long-term contracts. Overall, market transactions were relatively sluggish.
