Aclara Technologies Selected for DOE Initiative, to Use AI for Rare Earth Separation Optimization

Published: Jul 29, 2026 09:45
[SMM Rare Earth Newsflash] Aclara Resources, a Canadian rare earth developer, announced that its U.S. subsidiary Aclara Technologies was selected for the US Department of Energy (DOE) Genesis Mission initiative, receiving federal funding support to utilize artificial intelligence to optimize the separation process of heavy rare earth elements. The project will develop an AI-assisted digital twin system, integrating data from Virginia Tech’s separation pilot plant and simulation technology from Argonne National Laboratory to improve rare earth recovery rates, purity, and production stability. Aclara’s pilot plant in Blacksburg, Virginia, was commissioned in March this year, providing technical support for its $277 million commercial separation project in Louisiana. The plant plans to start production in mid-2028, with an annual output of 1,131 mt of Pr-Nd, 148 mt of dysprosium, and 25 mt of terbium.

Aclara Resources Selected for US DoE Funding to Advance AI-Driven Rare Earth Processing
Toronto-listed rare earth developer Aclara Resources has been selected by the US Department of Energy (DoE) as a recipient of federal funding to advance AI-driven processing of heavy rare earths. The DoE’s Genesis Mission Initiative (GMI) aims to develop AI technologies to optimize domestic rare earth separation processes, and the success of the first-phase project will help the second-phase project secure additional federal funding. Aclara’s first-phase project, named “AI-Enabled Process Optimization for Multi-Feed Rare Earth Separation”, seeks to apply AI to optimize the analysis of rare earth elements from multiple raw material sources, improve process efficiency, product quality and operational stability, while accelerating the commercialization of domestic rare earth processing technology.

Indonesia Seeks to Address Regulatory Gaps in Alumina and Nickel Exports Amid Rare Earth Concerns
According to foreign media reports, Indonesia’s Presidential Office called for government agencies, law enforcement officials, and industry stakeholders to strengthen cooperation and address existing regulatory loopholes. Industry sources indicated that exports of alumina and nickel products have faced obstacles because the products contain rare earth components. As a major exporter, Indonesia rarely produces products with associated rare earths. As a result, the country has yet to issue any regulations that stipulate the permissible rare earth content in other export products.
