[SMM Rare Earth Daily Review: Rare Earth Prices Fall Under Pressure, Upstream-Downstream Stalemate] Overall, rare earth market prices are broadly in the doldrums, mainly due to the dual impact of reduced downstream inquiries and the decline in Pr-Nd oxide futures prices. Under such circumstances, suppliers showed little initiative in offering, the tug-of-war between upstream and downstream remained at a stalemate, and market trading was sluggish. In the short term, Pr-Nd product prices are expected to consolidate within a narrow range, weighed by the upstream-downstream stalemate.

SMM, July 28 – Rare earth market prices weakened overall today. Specifically, in the oxide market, Pr-Nd oxide fell 10,000 yuan/mt, dysprosium oxide and terbium oxide remained unchanged, gadolinium oxide fell 4,000 yuan/mt, holmium oxide fell 7,500 yuan/mt, and erbium oxide remained unchanged.

In the metal market, Pr-Nd alloy fell 10,000 yuan/mt, dysprosium-iron alloy remained unchanged, terbium metal remained unchanged, gadolinium-iron alloy fell 4,000 yuan/mt, holmium-iron alloy fell 5,000 yuan/mt, and lanthanum-cerium metal (alloy grade) remained unchanged.

Currently, the rare earth market as a whole exhibited a weakening price trend. Focusing on the Pr-Nd market, the futures price of Pr-Nd oxide edged down, while inquiry prices were low. Affected by this, some spot suppliers opted to slightly lower their offers, but factory quotations remained firm, causing trading to fall into a stalemate. In the metal market, prices also declined somewhat, but inquiry activity remained sluggish. Downstream magnetic material enterprises remained cautious in procurement, wait-and-see sentiment was thick, and the tug-of-war between upstream and downstream remained in a stalemate.

In the medium-heavy rare earth market, due to scarce inquiry activity, suppliers of products such as gadolinium and holmium slightly lowered their offers, yet the trading atmosphere remained sluggish. In contrast, prices of dysprosium and terbium products were relatively stable, with suppliers’ offers showing no significant change. Overall, rare earth market prices were generally in the doldrums, mainly affected by the dual impact of reduced downstream inquiry activity and the decline in the futures price of Pr-Nd oxide. Under such circumstances, suppliers showed low enthusiasm for active quoting, the stalemate between upstream and downstream persisted, and market trading performance was poor. In the short term, affected by the stalemate between upstream and downstream, Pr-Nd product prices may consolidate within a narrow range.

[Pr-Nd series continued to recover but transaction cooled down near the weekend, medium-heavy rare earth held up well, and magnetic materials saw limited growth following the price rise.] Currently, the overall circulation frequency of rare earth ore remains poor, market trading is stagnant, and weak oxide prices have caused a downward shift in the center of actual transaction prices of rare earth ore.

[SMM Analysis] India Rare Earths: Application End Potential Is Real, But Industry Chain Self-Reliance Is Still Early
On August 13, 2026, the Ministry of Heavy Industries of India officially launched the technical bid evaluation for the "Sintered Rare Earth Permanent Magnet Manufacturing Promotion Plan" (REPM), with 20 bids vying for up to five licenses. On the surface, it appears to be a fierce "20-for-5" competition, but when examining the industry's fundamentals, the real protagonist of this story is not the 72.8 billion rupees (about $765 million) in subsidies, but the "three clocks" running simultaneously in India—the policy clock is already pointing to mass production in 2028, the commercialization clock of state-owned enterprise IREL points to 2029–2030, and the certification clock of downstream clients is measured in "years." The desynchronization of these three clocks is the most intuitive footnote to the fact that it is still too early for India's rare earth industry chain to develop.
