[SMM Sheets & Plates Daily Review] Raw Material Support Leads to Slight Rebound in Sheets & Plates Prices

Published: Jul 23, 2026 17:16
The most-traded HRC contract rose initially before weakening during the daytime session, closing at 3,291 with a gain of 0.21%. In the spot market, HRC spot prices fell by 5-10 yuan/mt, while CRC spot prices remained stable. In terms of supply, HRC production fell by 31,100 mt WoW this week as some mills added short-term rolling line maintenance. Overall, HRC supply pressure remained low and little changed. Demand side, futures were volatile today, with some low-price volume occurring in the morning before transactions weakened in the afternoon. Overall trading improved compared to the previous few days. Cost side, daily average hot metal output fell by 13,500 mt WoW this week, and the first-round coke price cut was implemented. However, futures had previously priced in multiple rounds of cuts, and with tightened safety inspections and elevated oil prices, cost support persists. In summary, off-season characteristics are deepening, with total HRC inventory continuing to accumulate. However, before macro expectations are disappointed and while cost support remains, HRC prices are expected to continue consolidating in the short term.

[SMM Sheets & Plates Daily Comment] HRC futures surged alongside costs, with production still expected to edge down
Today, HRC futures prices strengthened significantly, with the most-traded contract closing at 3,340, up 1.49% intraday. In the spot market, prices increased by 30-50 yuan/mt overall, while intraday transactions were average; as futures rallied too fast, most traders adopted a wait-and-see attitude, and downstream buyers showed relatively low acceptance of high prices. On the fundamentals side, from the end of August to September, maintenance schedules for hot rolling have increased notably. This week, the impact from maintenance for hot rolling is expected to continue increasing, with production edging down. On the demand side, downstream buyers' willingness for concentrated purchases was not high, with most still in off-season sentiment, making it difficult to see significant improvement; in the short term, the pattern of weak supply and demand persists. However, on the cost side, with growth in hot metal, coupled with supply tightening due to Mongolian and Shanxi coal, and the expected first-round increase of coke, coking coal and coke led the gains, boosting market sentiment and driving finished steel prices higher. In summary, short-term HRC prices are expected to follow costs and hold up well.
