End-User Purchasing Enthusiasm Weakens, Tight Supply Pushes Up North China Spot Discounts [SMM North China Spot Copper]

In North China today, spot #1 copper cathode against the front-month contract was quoted at discounts of 120-60 yuan/mt, with an average discount of 90 yuan/mt, up 10 yuan/mt from the previous trading day. The average transaction price was 103,080 yuan/mt, up 165 yuan/mt from the previous trading day.

SMM, July 6 –

In North China today, spot #1 copper cathode prices against the front-month contract were reported at an average discount of 120 yuan/mt to 60 yuan/mt, with the average discount at 90 yuan/mt, up 10 yuan/mt from the previous trading day. The average transaction price was 103,080 yuan/mt, up 165 yuan/mt from the previous trading day. Futures edged up slightly, while downstream purchasing enthusiasm noticeably weakened, with only small amounts of restocking for essential needs. However, spot material supply in the market was relatively tight, strengthening suppliers' willingness to hold prices firm and driving spot discounts to narrow further; but overall market trading activity cooled down. In North China today, the copper cathode purchasing sentiment was at 2.39 (down 0.06 from the previous trading day), and the selling sentiment was at 2.46 (down 0.02) ().

SMM Morning Meeting Minutes: Overnight LME copper opened at $14,292.5/mt, then drifted lower to touch a low of $14,235/mt, before rebounding to a high of $14,384/mt, ultimately closing at $14,324.5/mt, up 0.56%. Trading volume was 19,000 lots and open interest was 264,000 lots, a decrease of 1,743 lots from the previous trading day, reflecting bears reducing positions. Overnight, the most-traded SHFE copper 2610 contract opened at 108,300 yuan/mt, touched a high of 109,030 yuan/mt and a low of 107,880 yuan/mt during the session, finally closing at 108,700 yuan/mt, up 0.67%. Trading volume was 45,000 lots and open interest was 210,000 lots, an increase of 5,925 lots from the previous trading day, reflecting bulls adding positions.

UK Recycling Industry Calls for Open Copper Scrap Trade Amid Limited Domestic Processing Capacity
The UK recycling industry is calling for continued access to global scrap markets as governments increasingly seek to retain strategic secondary materials domestically. Enicor Executive Chairman Tom Bird said the UK currently lacks sufficient domestic capacity to process all of its recovered metals, with brass and certain copper scrap grades particularly reliant on export markets. Restricting trade before sufficient domestic processing capacity is established could depress scrap values and weaken recycling incentives.
