US Army Partners with Firms to Build Critical Mineral Plants on Military Bases

The US Army has reached agreements with multiple enterprises to build critical mineral processing plants at military bases across the country, marking the first such move by the Trump administration to boost domestic production of critical materials. On the 25th, the US Army said in a statement that REalloys Inc., Titan Mining Corp., Ioneer Ltd., Energy X, and other enterprises had reached agreements with the Pentagon to build processing facilities for minerals including rare earths, graphite, lithium, and boron. The statement said REalloys would build a rare earth separation facility at the Tooele Army Depot in Utah, with its products to be stockpiled for military use. Titan Mining would build and operate a graphite purification facility at either the Pine Bluff Arsenal in Arkansas or the Anniston Army Depot in Alabama. Energy X and Ioneer Ltd. of Sydney (the only non-US company among the four involved) would build a lithium processing facility and a boron plant, respectively.

Greenland Rejects Rare Earth Exploration License Renewal Due to Uranium Mining Ban

The Greenland government announced on the 26th that it has rejected the application for renewal of the exploration license for the Kuannersuit rare earth project in the southern part of the region, submitted by Greenland Minerals, a subsidiary of Australia’s Energy Transition Minerals (ETM). In a statement, the Greenland government said, “According to the Uranium Act, further exploration is also impossible to discover a deposit that can be mined.” In 2021, the then-ruling left-wing Inuit Ataqatigiit (IA) implemented a uranium mining ban, and the Kuannersuit rare earth deposit, also known as Kvanefjeld, effectively halted project development because it contains associated uranium. In April, ETM said it had received a draft decision from the Greenland government that its application for renewal of the exploration license had been rejected by the mineral resources authority. The Australian company said in an email that its project can bring jobs, training, and income to Greenland and the town of Narsaq.
