[SMM Aluminum Flash News] Scandium Canada Partnered With University of Waterloo to Develop Aluminum-Scandium alloy

Published: Jun 9, 2026 14:29
Scandium Canada has partnered with the University of Waterloo to develop aluminum-scandium alloys for additive manufacturing applications. The collaboration between Scandium+ and Waterloo’s Multi-Scale Additive Manufacturing Laboratory (MSAM) will initially focus on establishing manufacturing parameters for Laser Powder Bed Fusion (L-PBF) metal 3D printing. The project aims to expand the commercial adoption of aluminum-scandium alloys while reducing production costs. Known for their high strength, lightweight properties and resistance to cracking, aluminum-scandium alloys are considered attractive for aerospace and defense applications. The initiative will also support the development of a North American scandium supply chain and generate technical data needed for wider industrial adoption.

SHFE Aluminum Prices Decline, Casting Alloy Resilience Narrows Futures Spread
[SMM Aluminum News Flash] Recently, SHFE aluminum prices have accelerated their decline, and casting aluminum alloy futures have also weakened. However, supported by factors such as tight aluminum scrap supply, tax invoice constraints and high costs, casting aluminum alloy prices have shown strong resilience, clearly outperforming primary aluminum in downside resistance. As a result, the price spread between the AL and AD futures has continued to narrow, hitting a new low since the contracts were listed. In the spot market, the positive price spread of ADC12 over A00 aluminum has widened in tandem.

ADC12 Prices Decline Amid Futures Weakness, Cost Support Limits Drop
[SMM Aluminum Alloy Daily Review] Today, ADC12 market quotes continued to decline overall. SMM ADC12 price fell by 150 yuan/mt from the previous day to 23,800 yuan/mt. SHFE aluminum and cast aluminum alloy futures weakened, putting pressure on spot quotes, and enterprises followed suit. At the same time, the decline in aluminum scrap procurement costs was relatively limited. Coupled with tight tax invoices and persistently tight spot supply, cost support remained in place, and sentiment of holding back from selling at low prices was evident. Overall, although current ADC12 prices pulled back under the drag from futures, cost support and tight spot supply limited the decline.
