Overseas Metallurgical Alumina Output Sees Slight Recovery, Geopolitical & Policy Risks Weigh on June Outlook

Published: May 31, 2026 12:46

SMM, MAY 31 –
According to SMM statistics, overseas metallurgical alumina production in May 2026 fell by approximately 3.9% year-on-year, while rising by about 3.3% month-on-month. Ongoing disruptions in the Middle East kept output below last year's level, though a modest recovery was seen from April's low point.

In terms of production structure

Vedanta's FY26 earnings report showed full-year alumina production reached 2.9 million tonnes, a record high, mainly due to a 48% surge in output from the Lanjigarh refinery and cost optimization. The aluminum business contributed nearly 50% of the group's EBITDA, with production costs falling to $1,752 per tonne, the lowest in five years.

According to South32's previous guidance, its Worsley alumina project continued to experience shipment disruptions due to tropical cyclones and third-party gas supply interruptions. The company maintained its full-year production guidance of 3.75 million tonnes, but expects second and third quarter output of 959,000 tonnes and 886,000 tonnes respectively, showing a phased decline.

Additionally, geopolitical risks continued to simmer. The European Commission is considering tightening restrictions on alumina exports to Russia, which could reshape European alumina trade flows if sanctions are upgraded. Indonesia's Marine and Fisheries Ministry sealed three jetty berths of Well Harvest Winning Alumina (WHW) over compliance issues. The company is actively communicating with authorities and expects the berths to reopen soon, with local production temporarily unaffected.

Looking ahead to June, uncertainties persist in overseas metallurgical alumina supply. Output is expected to edge down about 0.2% month-on-month. On the one hand, Indonesia's bauxite quota issues could disrupt local alumina refining; on the other hand, potential further EU restrictions on alumina exports to Russia would also affect output in related regions. The convergence of these factors is expected to lead to a slight fluctuation in overall overseas production.

【SMM Aluminum Flash】ALFED Calls for Greater Domestic Recycling Capacity to Retain Aluminum Value in the UK
The Aluminium Federation (ALFED) said the UK already has strong aluminum collection and recycling systems, but lacks sufficient high-value domestic processing capacity, resulting in large volumes of aluminum scrap being exported. In 2025, the UK exported more than 623,000 tonnes of aluminum scrap, including over 23,000 tonnes to the United States, while still importing around 90,000 tonnes of scrap. ALFED called for greater investment in advanced sorting, alloy-specific recycling and remelting capacity, arguing that treating aluminum scrap as a strategic secondary raw material would strengthen supply chain resilience, reduce reliance on primary aluminum imports and retain more economic value within the UK.

Mercedes-Benz and Norsk Hydro have expanded their long-term partnership to accelerate the use of recycled aluminium in Europe. Under the agreement, Mercedes-Benz will become the first European automaker to use Hydro CIRCAL in serial production for its next-generation large electric vehicles. The material contains at least 75% post-consumer recycled (PCR) aluminium, up from the previous minimum of 25%. The companies will also expand the use of Hydro REDUXA low-carbon primary aluminium, aiming to reduce emissions, strengthen regional supply chains, and support circularity across the automotive value chain.

【SMM Aluminum Flash】India Diversifies Aluminum Scrap Sourcing After Middle East Export Restrictions
India's aluminum scrap importers are seeking alternative supplies from Brazil, the Dominican Republic, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Malaysia after several Gulf countries imposed aluminum scrap export restrictions from June 10. In FY2025/26, India imported 2.02 million tones of aluminum scrap worth INR 40,203 crore (US$4.2 billion), with the Middle East supplying around 400,000 tones, or nearly 20% of total imports. The restrictions are expected to remain in force until October 8. Industry participants said higher global scrap prices, longer shipping routes and India's 2.5% import duty are raising landed costs, prompting calls to remove the duty to improve the competitiveness of India's secondary aluminum industry.
