China Silicon Metal Production Edged Up in May; What's June Outlook?

Published: May 29, 2026 17:52
According to SMM data, China's silicon metal production in May was 331,300 mt, up 3.6% MoM and up 7.6% YoY. Cumulative silicon metal production from January to May 2026 was 1.6319 million mt, up 6% YoY.

SMM News, May 29:

According to SMM data, China's silicon metal production in May was 331,300 mt, up 3.6% MoM and up 7.6% YoY. Cumulative silicon metal production from January to May 2026 was 1.6319 million mt, up 6% YoY.

The MoM increase in silicon metal operating rates in May was limited. The MoM increase in production was attributable to, on the one hand, one more production day in May, and on the other hand, production resumptions at individual silicon enterprises in Sichuan and other regions.

Entering June, the pattern of simultaneous increases in both supply and demand for silicon metal is clear. On the supply side, major producing regions including Yunnan, Sichuan, and Xinjiang all have expectations of increased output — Yunnan and Sichuan due to production resumptions during the rainy season, and Xinjiang due to production increases from the restart of temporarily halted silicon furnaces. In June, electricity prices in Sichuan and Yunnan during the rainy season will see slight downward adjustments, but with the sluggish silicon metal market, some silicon enterprises remain on the sidelines regarding production resumptions, and some Yunnan silicon enterprises plan to resume production in mid-June. Overall, silicon metal production in June is expected to increase MoM to above 360,000 mt.

[SMM PV Update] 2.4 GW Solar Cell Plant Planned!
Indian renewable energy enterprise Solarworld Energy has entered into a partnership with domestic solar enterprise Rays Power, with each party holding a 50% stake, to jointly establish Rays Green. The company plans to build a 2.4GW TOPCon PV cell plant in Mohasa, Narmadapuram district, Madhya Pradesh, India. The project covers an area of approximately 250.7 mu, with a total investment of 10 billion rupees, equivalent to approximately 704 million yuan. The project's funding sources have been adjusted, as Solarworld Energy intends to redirect the funds originally raised for its subsidiary Kartik Solarworld's 1.2GW TOPCon cell project to this new 2.4GW cell plant. According to available information, as early as September 25, 2025, Solarworld Energy disclosed its prospectus, planning to invest 4.2 billion rupees of raised funds in the 1.2GW TOPCon cell project in Pandhurna, Madhya Pradesh, with a total estimated project investment of 5.753 billion rupees. Following the implementation of this capacity expansion, India's domestic TOPCon cell capacity will be further enhanced, supporting the country's strategy of localizing PV manufacturing and reducing dependence on upstream cell imports.
