[PV: 105 MW Pastoria Solar Project Goes Online in California to Power State’s Largest Electricity Consumer]
April 21, 2026, the California Department of Water Resources and Calpine have commissioned the 105 MW Pastoria Solar Project in Arvin, Kern County. The facility, utilizing 226,000 tracking-enabled panels, is dedicated to powering the Edmonston Pumping Plant—California’s single largest power consumer—which lifts water 610m over the Tehachapi Mountains. By securing this dedicated renewable source, state officials aim to insulate water delivery costs from energy market volatility exacerbated by the rapid growth of AI data centers. The project, completed with union labor, supports California's 2035 carbon-neutrality mandate and will eventually integrate with a planned 80 MW "Pastoria Power Bank" battery system.
