Tesla said its nine-millionth electric vehicle had rolled off the production line at the Shanghai Gigafactory, marking another symbolic milestone as 2025 draws to a close.

Shanghai (Gasgoo)- On December 30, Tesla said its nine-millionth electric vehicle had rolled off the production line at the Shanghai Gigafactory, marking another symbolic milestone as 2025 draws to a close. The vehicle was a Model Y.

Tesla reached its eight-millionth EV in June 2025 at its Berlin Gigafactory, also with a Model Y. The jump from eight million to nine million vehicles took just six months, highlighting the company's accelerating production pace across its global manufacturing network.

Looking back, Tesla's first million-vehicle milestone came in March 2020, roughly 12 years after the company was founded. By August 2022, CEO Elon Musk said total production had surpassed three million units. In September 2023, the automaker reported cumulative output of five million vehicles, achieved only about six months after the four-millionth car left the line.

Nearly half of Tesla's global vehicles have been built in Shanghai. In early December 2025, the Shanghai facility marked the rollout of its four-millionth vehicle. Moving from three million to four million units in under 14 months, the plant has become a clear example of Tesla's rapid capacity ramp-up and manufacturing efficiency.

According to Tesla, over the past six years the Shanghai Gigafactory has accounted for close to half of the company's global EV deliveries, achieved a localization rate of more than 95%, and maintained an average output pace of one vehicle every few dozen seconds.

Public records show that the Shanghai Gigafactory is located in the Lingang area of the China (Shanghai) Pilot Free Trade Zone. Covering about 860,000 square meters, it began operations in 2019. The plant's annual capacity is estimated at up to 950,000 vehicles, representing roughly 40% of Tesla's global manufacturing capacity.
