China Electronics Standardization Institute and IEEE Working Group Visit Shaanxi Hydrogen Research Institute to Discuss Cooperation, Accelerating Standardization of Hydrogen-Powered Drones

On December 8, a joint working group from the China Electronics Standardization Institute and the IEEE Hydrogen Energy Unmanned Aerial Vehicle (UAV) Series Standards visited Shaanxi Hydrogen Research Institute. They engaged in in-depth discussions on standard development in the application field of hydrogen-powered UAVs, aiming to build consensus and define pathways for the standardized development of this emerging interdisciplinary area.

As a key direction integrating the low-altitude economy and the hydrogen energy industry, hydrogen-powered UAVs offer significant application potential in sectors such as inspection, emergency response, and logistics due to advantages like long endurance, high payload capacity, and zero emissions. However, the industry currently lacks unified technical specifications, which hinders the industrialisation process. During the exchange, both parties focused on industry pain points and discussed three core issues: joint development of potential technical standards to fill gaps in specifications for safety performance, power systems, and environmental adaptability of hydrogen-powered UAVs; collaborative application for international standard projects to facilitate the participation of Chinese technological solutions in global rule-making; and cooperation on industry-academia-research-application synergy projects to promote deep integration of standards with industrial applications.

Leveraging the authoritative advantages of the China Electronics Standardization Institute in domestic standard system development, the resource accumulation of the IEEE joint working group in the international standards field, and the practical experience of Shaanxi Hydrogen Research Institute in hydrogen energy application technology R&D, the three parties reached a clear cooperation intent. They will utilize complementary strengths to promote the implementation of standardization for hydrogen-powered UAV applications.
