[Malaysia EV Sales Surge, Boosting National Net-Zero Emissions Goal] According to foreign media reports, Malaysian automaker Perodua launched its first electric vehicle on Monday, selling the car and battery separately to reduce upfront costs, aiming to attract middle-income consumers. In a statement, the company said the model, named the QV-E, has a starting selling price of 80,000 ringgit (approximately $19,350), excluding battery leasing costs. The vehicle will use an LFP battery, offering a driving range of up to 445 kilometers. The battery will be leased to customers under a "battery-as-a-service" concept. Chief Executive Officer Zainal Abidin Ahmad stated, "This concept is our solution to address the anxiety associated with EV ownership. By offering this service, we will be able to provide customers with a lifetime battery warranty, giving them peace of mind." Data shows that EV adoption in Malaysia is growing, with registrations reaching 40,679 units in the first 10 months of 2025, compared to 28,048 units for the full year of 2024. Malaysia aims for EVs to account for 15% of total auto sales by 2030, supporting its ambitious goal of achieving net-zero carbon emissions by 2050.
