Tracking Green Hydrogen Projects—China National Coal Group Launches 122,000 mt Green Ammonia Project, Plans to Equip with 73 Alkaline and 11 PEM Electrolysis Units

According to the Jilin Provincial Investment Project Online Approval and Supervision Platform, China Coal Green Energy Technology (Siping) Co., Ltd. has successfully registered the "China Coal Green Energy Siping New Energy-Chemical Coupling Integrated Project (Ammonia Synthesis Section)" on November 12. This major project, with a total investment of 2.917 billion yuan, marks a substantial step for the traditional energy giant China Coal Group into the green hydrogen and green ammonia sector.

Located in the New-Type Industrialization Economic Development Zone of Siping City, Jilin Province, the project is expected to commence construction in December 2025 and be completed and operational by December 2027. The core construction involves a large-scale water electrolysis hydrogen production unit, with a total hydrogen production capacity as high as 75,200 Nm³/h. It will adopt a "alkaline + PEM" hybrid technology route, comprising 73 alkaline electrolyzers of 1,000 Nm³/h each and 11 PEM electrolyzers of 200 Nm³/h each. The produced hydrogen will be used for ammonia synthesis, ultimately achieving an annual production capacity of 122,000 mt of green ammonia.

As a wholly-owned subsidiary of China National Coal Group Co., Ltd., China Coal Green Energy's significant investment in this green ammonia project not only demonstrates the group's determination to transition towards green, low-carbon energy but also provides an important demonstration for the integration of the "new energy + chemical" industry in north-east China, holding positive significance for promoting deep decarbonization in the chemical sector.
