Malaysia to Export First Batch of Green Solid-State Hydrogen to Singapore Using China's Hydrogen Feng Solid-State Hydrogen Storage Technology

Sarawak, Malaysia, is preparing to export green hydrogen in solid form through a partnership between SEDC Energy Sdn Bhd (SEDCE) and its technology partner, Hydrexia Holding Limited.

SEDCE revealed in a statement that the first batch will be exported to Singapore, marking the first shipment of green hydrogen molecules produced in Sarawak to an overseas destination, while laying the foundation for a regional hydrogen ecosystem and supporting the global energy transition.This export will be carried out using the solid-state metal hydride hydrogen storage technology (MHX) of SEDCE's technology partner, Hydrexia Holding Limited, which stores hydrogen molecules in magnesium hydride.SEDCE also confirmed that it is in discussions with potential buyers to export green hydrogen produced at its Darul Hana H2 plant. These molecules are produced at the plant through a water electrolysis process using a proton exchange membrane (PEM) electrolyzer, which relies on water and electricity supplied from the power grid.

The Darul Hana facility is designed to produce 150 kg of green hydrogen per day, with the PEM method selected as the most suitable technology for Sarawak's current needs. According to SEDCE, there are currently 10 fuel cell electric vehicles (FCEVs) in Sarawak, including five Toyota Mirai used by the Prime Minister and Deputy Prime Minister, three hydrogen-powered buses operated by Sarawak Metro, and two Hyundai Nexo managed by Sarawak Energy. Hydrogen molecules from the Darul Hana H2 plant are transported via tube trailers, followed by a storage process where the molecules are absorbed into MHX units. These units will then be exported to additional destinations, where the hydrogen molecules are released from the solid for end use. SEDCE CEO Robert Hardin stated that operating a green hydrogen plant would be uneconomical without optimizing its potential.

Hydrexia is a leading provider of integrated hydrogen technology solutions, focusing on hydrogen production, storage, transportation, and application. Its MHX storage technology stores hydrogen molecules in magnesium hydride (MgH₂), addressing transportation bottlenecks by offering inherent safety and higher storage density, suitable for road, rail, and sea transport. Hydrexia Chairman and CEO Alex Fang noted that the reusable MHX storage containers are designed for safe transportation under ambient pressure and temperature while meeting the highest purity requirements.

SEDCE added that Deputy Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Energy and Environmental Sustainability Sarawak (MEESty), Ts Nurleyna Yunus, along with Chief Assistant Director of the National Nanotechnology Centre (NNC), Ts Mohd Nur Ikmal Salehmin, and Chief Assistant Secretary of the Ministry of Transport, Abdul Rahman Hashim, visited the plant. Additionally, SEDCE revealed that it is also developing the Rembus hydrogen plant to support the Kuching Urban Transportation System (KUTS). Established in 2019, SEDCE has promoted large-scale hydrogen projects such as the Sarawak Hydrogen Hub, which consists of the Japanese consortium's H2ornbill project and the South Korean consortium's H2biscus project.
