Shanghai (Gasgoo)- China's installed capacity of power batteries reached 76 GWh in September 2025, marking a 21.6% month-on-month and 39.5% year-on-year jump, according to the China Automotive Power Battery Industry Innovation Alliance ("CAPBIIA").
Of those, lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries continued to dominate with 62.2 GWh installed, accounting for 81.8% of the total—a 20.5% rise from August and a 50.4% jump from a year earlier. In contrast, ternary lithium batteries recorded 13.8 GWh, representing 18.2% of the total, up 26.5% month-on-month and 5.2% year-on-year.
In September, a total of 35 battery manufacturers supplied power packs for China's new energy vehicles (NEVs), one fewer than in the same month last year. The top two companies accounted for 48.5 GWh of installations, while the top five and top ten reached 61.6 GWh and 71.8 GWh, respectively. Their combined market shares stood at 63.8%, 81.1%, and 94.4%, with the top ten's share dropping by 4.4 percentage points year on year.
From January to September, total installed capacity of power batteries in China reached 493.9 GWh, up 42.5% year-on-year. LFP batteries contributed 402.6 GWh, accounting for 81.5% of the total and representing a 62.7% year-on-year surge. Meanwhile, ternary lithium batteries totaled 91.2 GWh, or 18.5% of total installations, reflecting a 7.8% decline compared with the same period last year.
From January to September, 51 power battery manufacturers supplied China's NEV market, two more than in the same period last year. The top two producers installed 321.9 GWh of capacity, while the top five and top ten delivered 403.5 GWh and 465.9 GWh, representing 65.2%, 81.7%, and 94.3% of total market share, respectively. The top ten's overall share declined slightly by 1.6 percentage points from a year earlier.
In September, China's total production of power and other batteries reached 151.2 GWh, up 8.3% month-on-month and 35.4% year-on-year.
Cumulatively, from January to September, battery production totaled 1,121.9 GWh, representing a 51.4% spike from the previous year.
Battery sales in September reached 146.5 GWh, growing 9% from the previous month and 42.2% from a year ago. Of this total, power battery sales accounted for 110.5 GWh, representing 75.5% of all battery sales—a rise of 11.8% month-on-month and 44.4% year-on-year. Other batteries contributed 36 GWh, up 1.0% and 36.1%, respectively.
For the first nine months of 2025, total sales of power and other batteries reached 1,067.2 GWh, up 55.8% year-on-year. Power batteries made up 73.7% of that total with 786 GWh sold, an increase of 48.9% year-on-year. Sales of other types of batteries totaled 281.1 GWh, accounting for 26.3% of the total and surging 78.9% year-on-year.
Battery exports in September totaled 26.7 GWh, up 18.2% from August and 28.3% year-on-year, representing 18.2% of monthly sales. Power battery exports accounted for 17.6 GWh, or 66% of the total exports, rising 17.1% month-on-month and 50.9% year-on-year. Exports of other batteries reached 9.1 GWh, up 20.3% from the previous month but slightly down 0.5% from a year earlier.
From January to September, China exported a total of 199.9 GWh of power and other batteries, up 45.5% year-on-year. Exports accounted for 18.7% of total sales during the period. Power battery exports reached 129.1 GWh, representing 64.6% of the total and growing 32.7% year-on-year, while exports of other batteries rose 76.3% to 70.7 GWh, or 35.4% of the total.
