On September 8, the list of preferred bidders was announced for the hydrogen pipeline project from Damao Banner to Baotou city, a key new energy initiative of China Huadian Corporation. This project serves as a crucial branch of Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region's "one trunk, dual loops, four outlets" green hydrogen transmission network, aiming to establish a hydrogen transport network covering western Inner Mongolia and promote large-scale green hydrogen applications.
Pipeline Specifications:The pipeline spans approximately 195 km, with a design pressure of 6.3MPa and a diameter of DN457. It has an annual hydrogen transmission capacity of 100,000 mt, supported by four newly built stations (including a starting station, distribution station, and terminal station) and six valve chambers. The route passes through Darhan Muminggan Joint Banner and Guyang County in Baotou, as well as Urad Front Banner in Bayannur, ultimately reaching the terminal station in Kundulun District, Baotou.
Technical Positioning:The project employs domestically leading straight-seam submerged arc welded steel pipe technology, ensuring long-term stable operation in high-pressure pure hydrogen environments. Compared to traditional truck transport, hydrogen transmission costs are expected to decrease by over 80%.
General Construction Contract:Divided into six sections, five central state-owned enterprises—including China Communications Petroleum & Natural Gas Pipeline Engineering Co., Ltd., Sichuan Petroleum & Natural Gas Construction Engineering Co., Ltd., and China Petroleum Pipeline Engineering Co., Ltd.—were selected as primary bidders, covering all aspects from pipeline laying to station construction.
Steel Pipe Procurement:Three enterprises, including Inner Mongolia Baotou Steel Union Co., Ltd., will supply customized hydrogen transmission pipes across three sections, with delivery required by November 2025.
Project Supervision:Zhongye South China Wuhan Engineering Consulting Management Co., Ltd. and Shandong Shengli Construction Supervision Co., Ltd. will oversee quality control across two sections.
Schedule:Construction and supervision are set to commence on September 5, 2025, with completion targeted by December 5, 2025, totaling 90 days to ensure green hydrogen transmission capacity within the year.
This project is a critical component of Huadian Group's "wind-solar-hydrogen-storage-vehicle" entire industry chain deployment in Inner Mongolia. Upon completion, it will connect the Bayan Obo Mining District's green hydrogen production site with Baotou's end-user hydrogen applications, advancing regional supply and demand integration. As one of China's high-pressure, large-capacity hydrogen pipelines under concurrent construction, its technical parameters (6.3MPa, DN457) complement the Ulanqab-Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei demonstration project and the Kangbao-Caofeidian project (the world's largest hydrogen transmission volume), collectively supporting China's cross-regional hydrogen transport network.
The project is expected to significantly reduce green hydrogen delivery costs from Inner Mongolia through large-scale pipeline transmission, providing stable supply for industrial and transportation hydrogen applications in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei and north China regions, thereby accelerating the realization of "dual carbon" goals.
